walking for off-season fitness

or maybe it's in-season fitness. or as a way to stay fit when you can't ride. or stay fit when you have almost no time. or as a way to build up a desire to ride. whatever. Walking is just another way to stay active. Most of us walk a bit. On the days you can't ride, just walk a bit longer on the way to the subway, the office, at lunch, and on the way home. At one time, I thought I was the only person advocating this, and then I came across this CTS link....

Clothing for Cold Weather

Kissceners, I've been asked a few times about what to wear as the mercury dips. This question has gotten harder over the years as clothing options have proliferated. When I started it was wool, wool, and wool. Layers and layers. Nylon windbreakers were used over all the wool. If the windbreaker wasn't enough, you put some newspaper down your jersey. Wool jackets with nylon fronts were just starting to come in. If your feet were cold, you got extra large wool socks and threw them over...

The Key to Nailing dis/mounts

Just like the directions to Carnegie Hall: practice, practice, practice. There is, however, a division in how to get comfy with efficient dismounting and re-mounting. There are those who say it's a leap of faith. Most have trouble with said leap. I think the key is walking before you fly. That is, work on getting on and getting off the bike at a slow speed. Start by standing and swinging a leg over. When that's comfortable, do it at a walking pace, then jogging pace, then running,...

Chamois Time Ain't Training Time!

As much as you like your cycling shorts, feel good in them, and look good in them, it's a good idea to get them off as soon as you can following your ride. Leaving sweat and bacteria to fester next to the skin is a recipe for saddle sores and all manner of crotch troubles. Bring something else to wear for after the race or if you're driving home after the ride.

Compiled by J.P. Partland.

Here's the 2006 CX schedule I put together. I culled it from the usual sources. spokepost.com, ne-bra.com, njbikeracing.com, nycross.com, necyclocross.com, midatlanticcross.info, etc. There's actually quite a bit nearby.
