A Shout-Out for our Guy Wojciech

His 12,000-mile Double Transcontinental bike ride just finished on Saturday. A double dose of American awesomeness. He rode off the mainland to Manhattan and then to another island in our fair archipelago. All base miles. Strong like bull. Two or three weeks of intervals and watch out.

You should read up on his exploits. Here's his blog ]http://ltt3.blogspot.com/

Here's a profile of him from an Ohio paper www.reviewonline.com/page/content.detail/id/555112/Young-man-bicycles-across-the-country.html?nav=5008

Retire the racing tires for winter

Those Pro3 Races, CX Open tubulars, and the like were fine in the summer. Roads were clean, races were a few times a week, and it was warm. Now, none of those are operative any more. The roads are a mess and getting worse, races are months away, and the temperature is diving. Do yourself and your riding buddies a favor and roll out winter tires. I don't mean tires just with breaker belts, but heavier tires with more rubber on the treads, thicker carcasses, and more casing protection. My favorites are Specialized's Armadillo and Continental's Gatorskin, but there are lots of good winter tires out there. It also might be good to get a wider tire, like a 25 as opposed to a 23, for a little more pinch protection on rough roads and a more comfortable ride. Yes, these tires are slower than racing tires, but fixing a flat on a cold day will wreck your average speed and make you uncomfortable and your friends angry.

Race the Super Cross Cup This Weekend!

Great race. It's close to the city, easily accessible via public transit, has a great course designer, and a pretty sweet prize list.

Race. If you don't race, spectate. If you can't spectate, get your friends to come.

www.bikereg.com/events/register.asp?eventid=14481

Two days. Lots of races to choose from.

And tell two friends.

Always be prepared for bike cleaning

As we're getting into the messier period of the year, here's a great primer from Radio Freddy of BKW on how to set up a wash bucket for bike cleaning.

www.belgiumkneewarmers.com/2008/10/the-art-of-the-bike-wash.html

Get the bucket, throw in the supplies, leave it under the sink, in the closet, or the trunk.

Apartment dwellers can use their bathtub, though it's usually a good idea to clean the tub afterwards.

Pro dressing for your road rash

One of the toughest things about recovery from road rash is figuring out how to keep bandages secured over open wounds. Tape doesn't do it, and most dressing that is easily found doesn't stretch. That's why pro bike racers always seem to have dressings held in place with some kind of mesh tube. With the help of intrepid Kissena members, I tracked down the stuff. Sometimes a medical supply store will have it, but you can also find it

Here:www.drugstore.com/curad-hold-tite-tubular-stretch-bandage-large/qxp209765
